Canine Parvovirus

By Susan Jensen

This disease is transmitted through the bodily fluids of infected animals. An unvaccinated Sibe is extremely likely to become infected with the Parvovirus at any age!

Characteristics of Parvo are severe, bloody diarrhea and vomiting, high fever and lethargy. The diarrhea is sometimes yellow in color and is foul smelling. Parvo can also cause congestive heart failure. It is extremely important to get your Sibe vaccinated. The suffering and death due to Parvo is horrific.

The best way to avoid a Parvo infection in your Sibe is to get the recommended vaccinations that begin at 6-8 weeks of age. This shot gives protection against several potentially fatal canine diseases all at the same time.

Parvo is extremely hardy in most environments. It can withstand wide temperature changes and most cleaning agents. You can bring home the virus on your shoes, hands and even car tires. Areas that are thought to be contaminated with Parvo should be washed completely with one ounce chlorine bleach per quart of water.

If you have adopted an older Sibe with no shot records tell your vet. They will vaccinate accordingly. Ask your vet for more details on Canine Parvovirus. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
