What is a Snow Nose?

By Susan C. Jensen

Does your Sibe with a black nose get a pink strip down the center in Winter? This is called a "Snow Nose". It is caused by a shortening of the daylight hours in Winter and less UV rays. Because their nose is colored black due to pigmentation in their genetics it fades somewhat in Winter due to the lack of sunshine. It will darken as the days get longer and become solid again by midsummer.

Not all Sibes with black noses do this and there are other reasons for pink noses. Some Sibes have "Liver Nose" which means they have a liver pigmentation rather than a black one. If your Sibe's nose seems irritated or swollen you should see your vet immediately.

Snow Nose is not considered a fault to the AKC. Depending upon your geographic location you might not ever see a Sibe with a Snow Nose.

Just another reason you gotta' love those Sibes.
