Safe Chews and Treats for Puppies

By Patricia Tiedy

NEVER GIVE YOUR SIBERIAN HUSKY COOKED BONES. Uncooked knuckle beef bones from the butcher are excellent. They also keep your puppy 's teeth white and free of tartar. It provides them with hours of satisfied chewing time. It will also keep their teeth clean and white and prevent you from having to take them in for teeth cleaning from the Vet. It also prevents "doggie-breath" and future dental bills. Until about four months of age, when they loose their baby teeth, and get their adult teeth, it will be necessary to keep them supplied with lots of CHEWIES. If you don't, they will find their own, your shoes, your dining room chairs, or whatever. KONG toys are very strong and durable for teething pups. You can fill the hollow end with peanut butter, yogurt or small pieces of dog biscuits mixed with peanut butter or whatever is nutritious for your puppy. We frequently give our puppies apples, pears or carrots to chew on. They all love most raw fruits and veggies. These are not meant to be part of their dietary intake, they are just something healthy to chew on.. I have also had folks tell me about using a "Buster Cube" and filling it with the same healthy snacks. We have not tried it yet but we certainly will. Please remember, IF YOU ONLY KNEW WHAT IS IN SOME OF THE DOG TREATS THAT ARE SOLD FOR DOGS, YOU WOULD NEVER BUY THEM.

They mostly contain things with preservatives, artificial flavors and artificial colors. WHY not just give your puppy or dog a raw meaty bone or something healthy to chew on??

A WORD TO THE WISE IS TO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THE PET OR GROCERY STORES AS A CHEW TREAT. MOST OF THESE ARE PRESERVED WITH CHEMICALS THAT ARE REALLY NOT DESIRABLE OR SAFE. IT IS OUR POOR PUPS OR DOGS WHO SUFFER IN THE LONG RUN IF THEY ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE THESE.

RAWHIDE, A REASON TO BE CAUTIOUS.. Dogs can choke on it because normal rawhide unravels when wet and chewed on. The dog swallows the wet ribbon of rawhide and chokes. Alternatively, the dog eats it very quickly in large chunks. The chunks absorb water, expand, and clog the intestine. Both of these have caused painful deaths and expensive veterinary bills.

Rawhide is messy and unsanitary. The dogs chew on it and leave it on your carpet. Rawhide is very sticky (they even make glue out of rawhide,) so it picks up anything light that it touches and may leave stains on your carpet.

Rawhide is unrecognizable as a name brand. All rawhide looks alike and there doesn't seem to be a standard quality. Because it's made mostly in Thailand, Brazil, and Chile, rawhide quality varies from day to day and there is no such thing as good will in any brand name.

They also use things like ARSENIC and LIME to process the rawhide. This POISON does not get removed from the finished product before it is marketed on the unsuspecting public. You have every reason to be concerned with whatever you are giving your puppy to put into his/her mouth.
