What he had found was a small plastic basket with 5 kittens in it. Their eyes were barely open, clearly they had been abandon by someone who must have been going to throw them off the adjacent bridge.
It with great difficulty that my wife got Neco out from under the bush and back home. He definitely didn't want to leave those kittens there. As soon as they got home, my wife came back in her car to retrieve them. Unfortunately it was too late to save one of them, he died a day or so later. The other four we fed with an eyedropper for several weeks, bringing them to work, and on vacation. Neco even helped with the bathing. Two licks and each kitten was saturated!
Eventually we placed two in good homes, and kept the other two. Needless to say that Neco and the cats were the best of buddies! Neco passed on a year ago, and is missed by his cats. We got another husky, Chinook, a few days later. We couldn't live with out a husky in the house. As an aside to dog owners, don't let your friends get too heavy. Neco was at one point 110 pounds, and as a result developed diabetes, which was kept under control for a couple of years by twice daily injections of insulin. Ultimately he developed a condition called diabetic acid ketosis where the blood sugar goes high and is very difficult to bring back under control. We got him thru a couple of episodes of this, but finally lost the battle.
He was 14 and a half, so we have no real regrets, he had a very good life, and is missed by all.
